Emancipation Day is celebrated on the 1st August across the Caribbean and the Americas. It’s a commemoration of the liberation of African people, a day of remembrance, and an opportunity to reflect on the courageous efforts and sacrifices of enslaved men and women in the fight for their freedom.

I was commissioned to create a portrait of Princess Diana for a new film, The Princess, premiering on the 30th June 2022. I’ve created portraits of people in power around the world and I have been proud to shine a light on the lack of women in leadership positions, especially in the realm of religion, but I was really excited to have the opportunity to create a portrait of a powerful and inspiring woman. The Princess tells the ostensibly familiar story of Princess Diana’s life and tragic death, a tale that has been told countless times in books, dramatic recreations and even a musical. But this film is unique because it uses found footage captured at the time to highlight an alternative perspective on this familiar story.

As Patron of Women in Art - a wonderful initiative that aims to support, mentor and promote women artists and alleviate professional hard-ship, as well as working to raise awareness of women’s role in the art world and provide platforms to view the work of women artists - I was honoured to give out the prize for best artwork at the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize.

I wanted to create a series of work that could reflect how carnival is a day when usual social order is suspended. It provides an opportunity for people to temporarily shed their identity and adopt a different persona that can blur boundaries and transcend hierarchies. My primary focus when making this work was race, but I quickly realised that carnival is also a space in which people have a chance to explore their gender and sexuality too.
