Gender Expression at Rio Carnival

I wanted to create a series of work that could reflect how carnival is a day when usual social order is suspended. It provides an opportunity for people to temporarily shed their identity and adopt a different persona that can blur boundaries and transcend hierarchies. My primary focus when making this work was race, but I quickly realised that carnival is also a space in which people have a chance to explore their gender and sexuality too.
