The Making of Struggle, Solidarity

History of the Raised Fist Symbol

The raised fist is a global symbol of solidarity and the fight against oppression. It represents multiple struggles over time and across the world, including socialist and communist revolutions, black power and anti-apartheid, and female empowerment movements. It has used by oppressed groups around the world over the past two centuries. So many of these struggles are intertwined, and the fist is a symbol that communicates that we are in solidarity with others in a common struggle. People are unified by the raised fist as a symbol of strength, freedom and “we shall overcome”.
